Chico has a rich history of Native Americans and the Gold Rush history. The area was first settled by the Maidu Indians, who were hunters and gatherers. In 1832, the first Europeans were recorded to have arrived. Around 75% of California's Indian population died in the same year from diseases brought by Europeans.
General John Bidwell was one of several miners who found gold in the Feather River in 1848. He was a member of the first covered wagon trains that brought people to California. This led to a surge of prospectors in Butte County. Bidwell, who was rich in gold, bought 28,000 acres on both sides of Chico Creek. He also opened the first Gold Rush store. Chico was established in 1860, and later became a city in 1872.
Bidwell, a Washington congressman, fell in love with Annie Kennedy, a well-educated, Washington, D.C., daughter. They married in 1868. Soon after, they moved to California and focused on Chico. Bidwell Mansion would be the center of social and political activity in the Sacramento Valley.
