The fire started at Nevada's Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada rocket-fuel factory in Henderson's Gibson Springs. The fire quickly spread to the factory, ejecting rocket fuel, smoke, and toxic fumes. It was eventually destroyed in a large explosion that was followed by six smaller explosions. Two major explosions measuring 3.0 and 3.5 on the Richter scale, at observatories in California, and Colorado, measured smoke from 100 miles away. These explosions caused shockwaves in Henderson and other parts of the Las Vegas Valley, shattering glass and causing damage to buildings. 2 people died and 372 others were hurt. The blast was similar to a 1-kiloton nuclear detonation according to investigators who surveyed the damage done in the surrounding areas.
Years later, Henderson saw a surge in development due to the PEPCON factory explosion. This led to a shift from Henderson's historical industrial development into residential and commercial development. The site of the explosion is now largely untouched. The site is mainly composed of office buildings today.
