About Fort Worth, Texas

At 6:15 PM on March 28, 2000, a tornado whipped through downtown Fort Worth, causing extensive damage to many buildings. One of the most damaged structures was the Bank One Tower. It was a prominent feature of Fort Worth's skyline. Reata, a popular eatery, was on the top floor. Since then, it has been transformed into upscale condominiums and renamed "The Tower". This was Fort Worth's first major tornado since the 1940s.

Fort Worth was the hub of all the dealing and wheeling when oil started to flow in West Texas in the early 20th century and again in the late 1970s. Horizontal drilling technology was able to make vast natural gas reserves from the Barnett Shale directly available under Fort Worth. This allowed many residents to receive royalties checks for their mineral rights. Fort Worth, along with many other residents, is now addressing the issues and benefits of underground natural gas reserves.
