Serious Dog Bite Injuries in Arizona: How Common Are They?

Dogs are known as “man’s best friend.” But for the nearly 900,000 people in the U.S. who are bitten by dogs and require medical treatment for their injuries, an encounter with a dog becomes serious.

According to statistics provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZ DHS), approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs annually.

From the years 2008-2012, a report by AZ DHS says that there were a total of 34,151 emergency department visits and 2,358 inpatient hospitalizations for dog bites in Arizona.

During these same years, the rate of inpatient hospitalizations for dog bites increased 139% compared to statistics for 2008. Some people may think that dog bite injuries are relatively rare; however, they are in the top dozen causes of non-fatal injuries worldwide.

Dog bite injuries may actually be even more common than AZ DHS statistics reveal. AZ DHS statistics do not include dog bite attacks that necessitated medical intervention at Veterans Administration hospitals, Department of Defense-run hospitals and tribal health clinics.

For the last year, the most recent AZ DHS statistics on dog bites were made readily available in a study. More than 27,000 people nationwide had to undergo reconstructive surgery because they were attacked by a dog.

The median cost of being hospitalized for a dog bite is approximately $17,000, and roughly one-fifth of patients are children under the age of 15.
