About Brownsville, Texas

Charles Stillman, an American entrepreneur who had established a riverboat business nearby, founded the city in 1848. Named after Fort Brown, the city was also named after Major Jacob Brown who died fighting during the Mexican-American War. The county government and the city are both major employers as they serve as the county seat. The service, trade, and manufacturing industries are also important employers. This includes a growing sector in aerospace and space transportation. The Port of Brownsville is used for international trade. In the early 1900s, steel production was booming and the city saw a significant increase in population. It is often cited as having one of the highest levels of poverty in the United States.
