A noticeable trend in county population growth was evident in 2010. This is a result of the increased population in the county's northern cities. These are major cities whose limits lie entirely north of U.S. Highway 83. It suggests that both residents and newcomers from outside the Rio Grande Valley may be looking to relocate from the county's population centers. Hidalgo County is also witnessing this trend. Los Fresnos, in particular, saw a 42.2% increase between 2010 and 2018. Other large cities like Indian Lake, Primera, and Rio Hondo all experienced a growth of more than 15% during the same time period. Contrary to this, Harlingen, La Feria, and San Benito, all along U.S. Highway 83 cities, saw a decrease of 1% over the same time period. Brownsville, which grew 4.4% between 2010 and 2019, was the city that experienced the greatest growth among Highway 83 communities in the county.
