Hennepin, like all Minnesota counties, is governed by an elected, nonpartisan board. Minnesota has five county commissions. Hennepin, Ramsey, and Dakota have five, Anoka, Anoka, St Louis has seven, and so on. Each commissioner represents an area with an approximately equal population. The county commission in Hennepin appoints county auditor-treasurer, county recorder, and medical examiner. Nonpartisan tickets are used to elect the county sheriff and county attorney. The Hennepin County Government Center is the county's central office. Hennepin County Medical Center and the Hennepin County Library System are overseen by the county. A chair is elected by the county commission to preside at meetings.
