More about Juneau Borough, Alaska

The Gastineau Channel was an important fishing spot for the Auke-Taku tribes long before European colonization of the Americas. They had lived in the area for thousands of years. Here was a village and burying place for the A'akw Kwaan. It is now known as Indian Point in the 21st Century. Each year, they harvest herring during the spawning period.

The A'akw Kwaan and Sealaska Heritage Institute have stood firm against European-American development at Indian Point since the latter part of the 20th century. This includes proposals from the National Park Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is considered sacred territory by the A'akw Kwaan, due to its burying ground as well as the significance of the point in their traditional methods of gathering seafood. There are still clams, gumboots chitons, grass, sea urchins, and tree bark that they collect for medicinal purposes. Sealaska Heritage Institute was supported by the state and the city to document the site of 78 acres. It was then listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 2016. It is the first Southeast Alaska traditional cultural property to be listed on the Register.

The Tlingit people are descendants of these indigenous cultures. The rich artistic traditions of Native cultures include carving, weaving, singing, dancing, orating, and even orating. Juneau is a significant social hub for the Tlingit and Haida of Southeast Alaska.
