More about Thousand Oaks, California

Newbury Park was more established than Thousand Oaks in the early 20th century. A few lots were available in the early 1900s. They were located between Borchard land to the south and Friedrich land to the north. In the early 20th Century, the Janss family bought 10,000 acres of land in Southern California. The name "total community" was eventually developed by the Janss family. Despite their early hopes, there were no large subdivisions built until the 1920s. The Great Depression of the 1930s hampered development even further. The 1920s saw the rise of the movie industry, which was a major industry.

Conejo Valley saw a boom in its population between 1950 and 1970. It grew from 3,000 to 33,000 residents between 1957 and 1970. Thousand Oaks was home to more than 103,000 people in 1989, compared to 3,500 residents back in 1957. Although agriculture and ranching were the main industries in the area until the 1950s, there was a steady stream of new businesses opening up over the 1960s and 70s. In the 1960s and 1970s, Thousand Oaks was home to many high-tech companies. Two high-tech businesses, Packard Bell and Technology Instrument Company, moved to Newbury Park in the 1960s. The Westinghouse Astroelectronics Laboratory and Semtech Corporation followed, as did Purolator Inc. and Westland Plastics.
