Mission San Rafael Arcangel, the 20th Spanish mission established in Alta California colonial territory, was founded by three priests, Father Narciso Duran of Mission San Jose, Father Abella, and Father Luis Gil y Taboada, both from La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles. It was established on Dec. 14, 1817, four years before Mexico became independent from Spain. The downtown and its mission were named after the Angel of Healing, the Archangel Raphael.
The original plans for the mission were to provide a hospital for Central Valley American Indians who became ill at San Francisco Mission Dolores. Father Luis Gil, a native American speaker, was appointed to manage the facility. Because of the excellent weather, San Rafael was elevated to full mission status in 1822.
