Double Springs was the first significant European-American settlement to be established in the region that became Gadsden. John Riley, an American Indian mixed-race settler and European-American settler, founded it in 1825. He built his home near two springs. Riley used Riley's house as a stop for stagecoaches on the Huntsville to Rome route. Gadsden's oldest building is still standing.
Brothers Asenath and Gabriel Hughes purchased the house in 1840. Much of the land was purchased by the Hughes brothers between Lookout Mountain and the Coosa River. Their land was purchased by the Hughes brothers who proposed building a railroad that would run from Savannah, Georgia to Nashville, Tennessee. The original Gadsden 120-acre survey included land from the Hughes brothers, as well as those of John S. Moragne.
Captain James Lafferty piloted Coosa, a steamboat that was brought to the settlement on July 4, 1845. He landed close to the Memorial Bridge. Although the Hughes brothers proposed renaming it "Lafferty’s Landing", residents chose "Gadsden" to honor Colonel James Gadsden from South Carolina. Later, he was noted for his negotiation of the United States' Gadsden Purchase From Mexico.
After the American Civil War ended in 1867, the legislature created Baine County. Gadsden was incorporated as the county seat. The new legislature disbanded Baine County and renamed the county Etowah County after a constitutional convention. Gadsden remained the county seat.
Gadsden was a significant river port on the Coosa River by the end of the 19th century and was second only to Mobile, a Gulf Coast seaport, in importance. It was also a hub for heavy industry.
