This was Willstown's home in the late 18th century and early 19th century. It was an important Cherokee settlement. It was home to Sequoyah, a silversmith, who in 1821 had created the Cherokee Syllabary. This is one of few pre-literate cultures' writing systems. His people published the Cherokee Phoenix, an English-language newspaper, in Alabama.
Willstown was the common name for this settlement, named after Will Weber, its headman. Weber had strikingly red hair. He was the son of Cherokee and German parents. John Norton, a Scottish-Cherish man who was born to Cherokee and Scottish parents in 1770, visited this area in 1809-1810. He was a British soldier who arrived in North America to serve as an interpreter.
The US Army, under Major John Payne, built a fort in Willstown for the purpose of interning Cherokees from Alabama. They were then forcibly removed into Indian Territory. The Trail of Tears was named after their forced exile. The only remaining chimney of Fort Payne can be found in the center of the city, which was built around it.
