Fort Dodge takes its name from a military post that was constructed there in 1850 to protect travelers along the Des Moines River. Secretary-General Kofi Annan was born here in 1938 and later received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for advancing international peace and development through peacekeeping efforts. Another famous Fort Dodge resident, Fred Grandy played Gopher on "The Love Boat." After acting, Grandy went onto serve in Congress from 1987-1995 before eventually running unsuccessfully for Governor in 1990 and 2002 respectively.
Fort Dodge was famously home to one of the country's first temporary exhibition halls - The Coal Palace - constructed in 1889 to showcase Fort Dodge's coal industry and attracted visitors from all across America at that time.
