Centennial was created from unincorporated Arapahoe County and the former Southglenn and Castlewood census-designated areas. Centennial was chosen by the citizens of the area to be their official name. This name is a reflection of Colorado's admission into the Union in 1876 as the 38th State. It also marks the centennial anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Colorado is known as the "Centennial State".

In an effort to increase its tax base, the city was incorporated to stop further annexations by Greenwood Village of unincorporated areas. Unincorporated areas of Arapahoe County generated the majority of county services including road construction. In a number of cases, the court ruled that incorporation was superior to annexation.
