In the postbellum period, the Bessemer Land and Improvement Company founded the town. It was named after Henry Bessemer and was owned by Henry F. DeBardeleben, a coal magnate. He had taken over the investments of Daniel Pratt. On September 9, 1887, the mayor and councilmen approved the incorporation of Bessemer. Bessemer, located 16 miles southwest of Birmingham, grew quickly and its promoters believed it would overtake the other city economically.
The city was a hub for steelmaking, thanks to the abundance of iron ore, coal, and limestone in the region. It was established around 1890. It attracted both South-based migrants and European immigrants. The city's population was dominated by African Americans by the 1950s.
In the latter 20th century, the industry underwent significant restructuring and many jobs were lost. There is no steel anymore.
