Governor Orval Faubus had directed the Arkansas National Guard's assistance to segregationists in preventing nine African-American students from enrolling in Little Rock's Central High School. After three unsuccessful attempts to contact Faubus on three occasions, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent 1,000 troops to the active-duty 101st Airborne Division to assist the African-American students in their entry into school on September 25, 1957. The governor and Little Rock closed the schools during the school year, in defiance of federal court orders. The Little Rock high schools had been integrated by the fall of 1959.
