The county seat of Calhoun County was moved from Jacksonville to Anniston in 1899. The community, which has more than 22,000 inhabitants, is still a vibrant center of commerce and industry 100 years later. Local officials and citizens have worked together over the years to maintain the natural beauty of the area and allow it to prosper economically and preserve its history. The Spirit of Anniston Main Street Program, Inc., which was founded in 1993, is a non-profit organization that led the revitalization of historic Anniston. Its focus was on Noble Street, the city's main thoroughfare.
Noble Streetscape Project encouraged local businesses to renovate storefront facades. Historic homes in the downtown area were also repaired and restored to their original condition. Calhoun County Courthouse was included in the preservation effort. It is located at the corner of 11th Street & Gurnee Avenue. Although the original building was destroyed in 1931, the courthouse was rebuilt one year later. The stately structure can still be used today thanks to a 1990 complete restoration.
Anniston has been a cultural hub for northeastern Alabama for a long time. In 1972, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival was established in Anniston. It remained there until 1985 when it moved to Montgomery for more financial support. Knox Concert Series presents an annual season featuring world-class musical and dance productions. The Community Actors Studio Theatre community theatre organization produces plays, musicals, and revues that feature local actors, musicians, and performers. CAST offers free programs for children who are unable to pay tuition. The Anniston Museum of Natural History is located in the city. These museums house dioramas of wildlife and mummies. They also have artifacts from an earlier age that are displayed and exhibited in modern, professional displays. Since 2004, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has presented a series of outdoor concerts called Music at McClellan at Fort McClellan.
Many Victorian-style homes can be found in the city, many of which have been preserved or restored. Many of the city's churches have architectural significance or are historic. These include the Church of St. Michael and All Angels and Grace Episcopal Church and Parker Memorial Baptist Church. The Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church is a predominantly African American church located in the Zion Hill community. Temple Beth El was dedicated in 1893 and is still being used for Jewish worship.
Noble Street, the original main street, is undergoing a revival as a shopping and dining area downtown.
Anniston is the western terminus of the Chief Ladiga Trail. It's part of a 90-mile, paved rail-trail that connects with the Silver Comet Trail of Georgia.
