About Alton, Illinois

Alton is a city located in southwestern Illinois, in the United States. The city is situated along the Mississippi River and is part of the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Alton is known for its rich history, which dates back to the early 19th century, and for its many cultural and recreational attractions, including parks, museums, and theaters.

One interesting fact about Alton is that it was once a major center for the abolitionist movement and was a key stop on the Underground Railroad. The city was home to several notable abolitionists, including Elijah P. Lovejoy, a Presbyterian minister who was killed by a pro-slavery mob in 1837. Lovejoy's death is considered a catalyst for the anti-slavery movement in the United States and is commemorated by a monument in Alton.

Alton has been home to a number of notable individuals throughout its history. Famous people who have lived in Alton include jazz musician Miles Davis, novelist William Gaddis, and painter Arthur Osver. The city has also been the site of several significant events, including the final debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in 1858, which was held at the Alton Amphitheater, and the 1904 lynching of African American resident William James, which was widely condemned by civil rights leaders and led to calls for stronger anti-lynching laws.
