About Harris County, Texas

In 1822, the first European settlers arrived in Harris County. Their schooner ran aground at the Red Fish Bar after it sailed into Galveston Bay. Some of these passengers traveled up the bay system further, but it's not clear if they settled in Buffalo Bayou or along the San Jacinto River. A Mr. Ryder was one of those passengers who settled in what is now Morgan's Point, Texas. John Iiams, a sailor from Berwick's Bay in Louisiana, settled his family at Cedar Point in 1822. Dr. Johnson Hunter arrived just after Iiams. His boat was also damaged near Galveston. He was granted land at Morgan's Point, where he settled. Nathaniel Lynch established a ferry service in the area.

Stephen F. Austin, the land empresario, and Stephen F. Austin met at William Scott's house in 1824 to transfer titles for Mexican headrights. Austin's secretary Samuel May Williams, the land commissioner, and Baron von Bastrop joined him. Around thirty families were granted legal titles to land in Harris County, which would become Harris County. In these early years, a few immigrants settled in Buffalo Bayou, including Moses Callahan and Ezekial Thomas.
