In 1873, railroad construction began east of Los Angeles. On July 16, 1875, trains were operated to Colton and Indio. The railroad continued eastward from Indio and reached the west bank opposite Yuma on May 23rd, 1877. The military authorization to build tracks across Yuma Indian reservations was delayed. It was not until September 1877 that the bridge was built so trains could reach Yuma. The Southern Pacific Railroad was supposed to join the Texas & Pacific railroads. This was one of many railroads that were seeking federal authority to construct lines from different parts of the country westward to the Pacific Coast. The T & P's railhead was far away in Texas so Southern Pacific began building eastward.
The City of Indio was created because the Southern Pacific Railroad needed a halfway point between Yuma, Arizona, and Los Angeles. Since the engines had to be refilled with fresh water, it was necessary to create the City of Indio. The original name of the city was Indian Wells 292; however, Indio was selected because it was more descriptive than other locations. Indio began to grow after the arrival of the railroad in 1876. Southern Pacific Depot station and hotel in craftsman style was the first permanent building. Southern Pacific wanted to make their workers' lives as easy as possible, so they didn't have to leave such a difficult place to live. It was the hub of social life in the desert, hosting Friday night dances and a fancy restaurant.
