The original inhabitants of the area were the Luiseno people, primarily the Pechanga tribe. The area was under Spanish control in the 18th century. It was then ceded to Mexico by the United States in 1848, as a result of the Mexican-American War.
The Menifee region was the first to experience farming, in the middle of the 19th century. Menifee's name is derived from the discovery of a quartz lode in the early 1880s by Luther Menifee Wilson. Wilson found a quartz ledge that contained gold near the present-day Holland and Murrieta roads and filed a claim to the San Diego County Recorder's Office for the new "Menifee". The Menifee Valley was the name of the area at the time.
The Menifee area was first developed by Sun City, an Arizona building contractor, in the 1960s. It was designed as an active retirement community and was initially planned by Del Webb. Webb also created Sun City, Arizona under the same concept. Sun City, located in Menifee's northwestern region, features both residential and commercial activity.
Later, the Menifee region grew as a master-planned community in the late 1980s and early 90s. Many residents drove to Temecula and Murrieta because they didn't have the resources to support their industry-oriented occupations or high-density commercial and retail businesses. Menifee has seen significant growth over the past few years. This has attracted many residents from all parts of Southern California, including Orange County, San Diego, and Los Angeles as well as other parts of the Inland Empire.
