Ada County is a conservative urban county. It is a Republican Party stronghold, just like Idaho. Franklin D. Roosevelt won Ada County's last presidential election victory. Even Lyndon B. Johnson was defeated in Ada County in 1964, during his 44-state landslide. In 2008, the election for president in Ada County was closer than ever before. John McCain beat Barack Obama by six percentage points. Obama was the first Democrat to win more than 40 percent of the county's votes since LBJ. Due to his high third-party performance, Donald Trump won the county in 2016 by a plurality. While the state of Idaho was strongly in Trump's favor, Ada County was won by Trump by a narrow majority. Biden lost by just 4 percentage points. This was the most narrow election Ada County has seen in decades and is also the closest a Democrat to win the county since 1940.
