Columbus was established in Georgia by an act of 1828. It is located at the Chattahoochee River's navigable section and the Federal Road before reaching Alabama. Christopher Columbus was the city's name. Dr. Edwin L. DeGraffenried designed the plan for the city and placed it on a hill overlooking the river. Many tribes of Creeks and other native peoples from Georgia and Alabama lived across the river to the west. This is where Phenix City, Alabama is located. The 1826 Treaty of Washington brought most Creeks west. In 1836, those who stayed and waged war were forcibly expelled.
