Gold was discovered in July 1858 along the South Platte River, Arapahoe County Kansas Territory. This discovery triggered the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Many of the residents in the mining area felt disengaged from the distant territorial governments of Kansas or Nebraska so they voted on October 24, 1859, to create their own Territory, Jefferson. El Paso County was one of 12 new counties created by the Jefferson Territorial Legislature. El Paso County was named after the Spanish name for Ute Pass, north of Pikes Peak. El Paso County's county seat was Colorado City.
