What is Elmiron? An Overview

Interstitial cystitis is an uncommon, painful condition that causes chronic pain in the bladder and wider pelvic region. While general pain medications can be offered to treat IC, only one oral drug is explicitly approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat it: Elmiron.

Elmiron has helped thousands of people, mostly women, control pain caused by IC. Unfortunately, long-term users of Elmiron have developed a unique vision problem dubbed pigmentary maculopathy.

Pigmentary maculopathy is a visual condition where the macula, a part of the eye housing a large number of light receiving neurons, becomes obscured and damages the patient’s ability to see. This can begin as a loss of night vision, but this condition can effectively disable a patient’s eyes if left untreated.

Elmiron manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals is not ignorant of this critical issue. In June 2020, they updated Elmiron’s labeling to include a warning about pigmentary maculopathy. This new warning comes 24 years after it was first approved by the FDA. This late warning and broad denial of liability have led to a number of lawsuits from patients who took Elmiron for decades and lost their vision.

If you have suffered from pigmentary maculopathy after taking Elmiron, you may be eligible to join these lawsuits and demand justice from Janssen. In order to add your voice to the public outcry, you will need an experienced mass torts attorney. An experienced mass torts attorney can help present your case in the best possible light, advise you on the strength of your case, and even withdraw you from a mass settlement if you are better served going to trial.

The right mass torts attorney can be the difference between financial relief and struggling with the costs of recovery on your own. The best way to find the right mass torts attorney is with Attorney at Law.
