What are Opioids? A Brief History

In the 90s, people were in pain. A so-called “opiophobia” prevented even those most deserving from getting the powerful pain relief of opioids. With industry backing, this trajectory was reversed and opioids became more available to everyone. However, this was implemented through several practices that have since been called reckless and irresponsible.

The term “opioid” refers to a particular type of painkiller known as analgesics. These painkillers produce not only relief, but also a euphoric feeling. Notably, opioids are derived from the poppy plant, placing it in the same chemical category as narcotic drugs like opium and heroin.

Despite this relationship, in the late 90s and 2000s, drug manufacturers pushed hard for opioids to be made available to an increasing number of patients. In relatively little time, opioids went from a last resort for end-of-life pain to a solution for pain caused by breaks and sprains. This overprescription led to the opioid crisis that has engulfed the nation.

This epidemic of opioid addiction was spurred on by a number of factors. From aggressive marketing campaigns funded by groups like the Sackler family and their corporation Purdue Pharmaceuticals encouraging the use of their product Oxycontin, to manufacturers who marketed directly to doctors by providing kickbacks or other incentives.

As more and more patients became addicted to these products, lawsuits were filed seeking to hold these manufacturers accountable for prioritizing sales over safety. For years, the entire legal world has been pushing for justice.

If you or a loved one has become addicted to opioids after they were pushed on you without proper warning of the risks, you may be able to file a lawsuit and join these mass tort cases. In order to join these cases, you will need an experienced mass torts attorney.

A mass torts attorney can do more than just help you join a mass torts case, they can advise you on whether a settlement offer will give you the compensation you need, and they can advocate for you in negotiations. The best way to find an experienced mass torts attorney is with Attorney at Law.
