On October 20, a Tennessee doctor was sentenced for illegally prescribing hydrocodone to a patient who later overdosed on the prescription medication. This brings an end to two years of litigation by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Thomas K. Ballard III was one of 53 medical professionals indicted in 2019 for prescribing addictive drugs to patients without a medical reason. In a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Ballard “engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with several female patients while he ignored red flags that they were abusing the medications he prescribed.”
This includes ignoring a patient’s past problems with drugs and psychiatric issues. Despite this, in 2015 Ballard prescribed medications to her, including the opioid hydrocodone, which soon led to her death.
Ballard was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
