A class action was filed against Peloton because of dozens of injuries tied to Tread+, one of the company’s treadmills. Peloton is known for its internet-connected exercise bicycles and treadmills that allow users to exercise via streaming classes.
Peloton faced criticism for refusing to recall the problematic treadmill, which was allegedly responsible for causing the death of a child in March after the child was trapped under the exercise device.
After the fatal injury to the child, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) issued a warning to consumers to stop using Tread+. The Commission released findings the same month the class action was filed that revealed that 39 children—and one pet—had been injured up to that point as a direct result of being trapped under the treadmill, which retails for more than $4,000.
Peloton was also under scrutiny for featuring a child in one of its advertisements for the Tread+. Plaintiffs in the class action say that Peloton should have known about the risks of the exercise machine and its defective nature.
