Midland County was the first area in Texas to become Republican. Harry Truman, the last Democratic presidential candidate to win this county in 1948, was last. Even though Lyndon B. Johnson (Texan Democrat) won a landslide victory in 1964's presidential election, the county gave 57.8% to Barry Goldwater, a Republican presidential candidate from Arizona. Midland County is in Texas's 11th congressional District, which is represented by Republican August Pfluger. In 2004, George W. Bush received 78% of the votes from the 11th Congressional district, which was higher than any other congressional area in the country.
