About Garland, Texas

The Craddock food business, which made pickles, relocated to the town in the 1930s. Garland was home to the KRLD radio tower in 1937. Many aircraft plants operated in Garland during World War II. Kraft Foods purchased the Continental Motors Plant in order to retool it for its manufacturing. Today, the Kraft plant is still in operation. Garland, a station on two railroads was a key point for onion shipping in the 1940s.

Resistol Hats is a prominent manufacturer of premium hats. Many of these hats have been worn or gifted to famous people around the globe. This company has been an integral part of Garland's manufacturing base for many years. E.R. founded the company. E.R. Rolnick and Byer founded Byer-Rolnick Dallas in 1927. The company was producing men's felt caps at the time. To indicate that the hats could withstand all weather conditions, the company called them "Resistol hats". According to some accounts, the company's headbands were more resistant than scalp oil. This was a growing company that needed to expand. It moved to Garland in 1938. Resistol hats are still manufactured there today. Residents living around the hat factory could listen to its whistle for decades.
