About Lawrence County, South Dakota

Lawrence County in western South Dakota's Black Hills is well known for its natural beauty and mining history, particularly Deadwood with its famous gold rush history and Wild West heritage. Deadwood has managed to retain much of its historical charm dating back to late 19th century buildings which make this popular tourist destination.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Lawrence County is its significance in relation to the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876. When gold was discovered here, thousands of prospectors and adventurers flocked there and the area rapidly developed - giving rise to towns such as Deadwood and Lead, with Homestake Mine becoming one of the world's largest and deepest gold mines - contributing greatly to local economies as well as history in Lawrence County.

Lawrence County's history will always remember Wild Bill Hickok's assassination at Nuttal & Mann's Saloon in Deadwood in 1876 as one of its signature events, immortalized through books, movies, and TV shows about this momentous chapter in American Old West history. Hickok, an iconic figure of American Old West history was killed while playing poker at this saloon and remains an integral part of Deadwood lore to this day.
