About Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

Mecklenburg County was created in 1762, from the western portion of Anson County. Both are in the Piedmont region of the state. It was named in commemoration of the marriage of King George III to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, for whom the county seat Charlotte is named. Uncertain boundaries meant that a significant portion of Mecklenburg County's south and western regions extended into areas that would become part of South Carolina. This area, which includes the part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River, was officially designated Tryon County in North Carolina in 1768.

It took decades to determine the boundaries of these "western" regions between North Carolina and South Carolina. The North Carolina legislature created Cabarrus County in 1792 to take the northeastern portion of Mecklenburg County. This was in response to the increase in population in the area after the American Revolutionary War. In 1842, the southeastern portion of Mecklenburg County was merged with the western section of Anson County to create Union County.
