About Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha's pioneer years began in 1854 when speculators from Iowa, Council Bluffs, founded the city. The Missouri River was the site of the city's founding. Lone Tree Ferry, a crossing that allowed for the passage of people, earned the city the nickname "Gateway to the West". This new West was introduced to the world by Omaha in 1898 when it hosted the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. Omaha's central position in the United States made it an important transportation hub during the 19th century. The city's railroads and breweries were also important throughout the remainder of the 19th century. The Omaha Stockyards, once one of the largest in the world, gained international fame in the 20th century.

Today, Omaha houses the headquarters of four Fortune 500 businesses: conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, Kiewit Corporation, insurance and financial company Mutual of Omaha, and Union Pacific Corporation, the largest US railroad operator. Warren Buffett is the local investor and Berkshire Hathaway's head.
