Douglas County was a conservative suburban county in the United States for a large portion of the period after World War II. From 1952 to 2004, it supported the Republican presidential candidate in every election except one. It has been far more competitive in national elections than the rest of the state over the past ten years. Barack Obama won a majority in the county's vote in 2008, making him the first Democrat to do this since 1964. He also won the 2nd congressional District by a narrow margin, earning him one electoral vote in the state. In 2012, the Republican column won the county with Mitt Romney winning it by a narrower margin. In 2016, the county returned to Democratic hands with Hillary Clinton winning a majority of its votes. However, unlike Obama eight years ago, she did not win the 2nd congressional district. Joe Biden, a Democrat, won the county by 11 percentage points in 2020. This is a record for Democrats over 56 years and it flipped the 2nd congressional district back to the Democratic side. Douglas County was won by Don Bacon, a Republican.
