The Kansas City area has seen extensive redevelopment in the 21st Century. More than $6 billion was spent on improvements to the downtown area. The main goal is to bring convention and tourist dollars, office workers, and residents to downtown KCMO. The Power & Light District was redeveloped in the area east of the Power & Light Building, the former headquarters of Kansas City Power & Light Company. It was transformed into a retail and entertainment district. In addition, the Sprint Center was built in 2007. It was funded by a 2004 ballot initiative that included a tax on cars and hotels. This was to allow for future NBA and NHL franchises to be built. Kemper Arena was eventually replaced by Sprint Center and fell into disrepair. The arena was being transformed into a sports complex, the Hy-Vee Arena. In 2011, the Kauffman Performing Art Center was opened.
