About Onawa, Iowa

Onawa is a small town in the western part of Iowa, located in Monona County. It is situated along the banks of the Missouri River, which forms the border between Iowa and Nebraska. Onawa is known as the "Wide Awake City" and has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when it was first established. Today, it serves as a hub for transportation, agriculture, and recreation in the area.

One of the interesting facts about Onawa is that it is the birthplace of the Eskimo Pie, a popular frozen treat that consists of vanilla ice cream coated in chocolate. The treat was invented by Christian Kent Nelson, a local candy store owner, in 1920. The original Eskimo Pie factory was located in Onawa, and the town even has a monument dedicated to this sweet invention.

Onawa has also been the site of several famous events, including the annual Monona County Fair, which has been held every summer since 1897. The fair features a variety of agricultural exhibits, carnival rides, and entertainment, and draws visitors from all over the region. In addition, Onawa was also the starting point of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition, which explored the western United States in the early 1800s.

Several notable people have lived in Onawa over the years, including actress Donna Reed, who was born and raised in the town. Reed is best known for her roles in films such as "It's a Wonderful Life" and "From Here to Eternity," and for her TV show "The Donna Reed Show." Another famous resident of Onawa was Iowa Governor and U.S. Senator Harold Hughes, who served in the 1960s and 1970s and was known for his efforts to combat alcoholism and drug addiction.
