About Monona County, Iowa

Monona County is located in western Iowa, in the western part of the state. It was established in 1851 and named after the Indian word for "peaceful valley." The county's location along the Missouri River made it an important area for trade and transportation in the 1800s. Today, Monona County is known for its agriculture and rural landscapes.

One interesting fact about Monona County is that it is home to one of the oldest surviving Carnegie Libraries in the state. The library, located in Onawa, was built in 1913 with funds from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
