About Guthrie Center, Iowa

Guthrie Center, Iowa's county seat and largest town, lies along the Middle Raccoon River. With a long and colorful history dating back to the mid-1800s, this charming downtown area and historic architecture are some of its drawcards. Additionally, there are plenty of parks and recreational opportunities in and around Guthrie Center - including one of Iowa's largest man-made lakes, Lake Panorama.

Guthrie Center is home to the restored 1910 Paramount Theatre, one of Iowa's few remaining examples of early 20th century theater design. This theater boasts a restored Wurlitzer organ and regularly hosts live performances such as music concerts or theatrical productions. Furthermore, in Guthrie Center was established the Guthrie County Historical Village - a living history museum that displays the county's agricultural and industrial heritage.

Many famous people have connections to Guthrie Center, including former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad who was born and raised there and served as governor from 1983-1999 and again from 2011-17. Branstad was known for his conservative policies and leadership during difficult times. Other notable individuals include Major League Baseball player Tim Flannery (born nearby Clarinda and attending high school in Coon Rapids) as well as novelist William Least Heat-Moon who lived in the county for several years before writing a book about his experiences there).
