Hancock County, Indiana is a rural and scenic county situated in the central part of the state just east of Indianapolis. It's known for its parks and nature preserves throughout, as well as several historic sites and landmarks like James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home.
One unique fact about Hancock County is that it was the birthplace of the iconic Coca-Cola bottle, designed by Earl R. Dean from Greenfield in the county. After winning a nationwide contest, his design became official for Coca-Cola in 1916.
Hancock County has had some notable residents throughout history. James Whitcomb Riley, a renowned poet who lived here during the late 1800s, and William Dudley Pelley--founder of both the Silver Legion of America and controversial political figures--both resided here in Noblesville.
One of the most significant events to happen in Hancock County was the Indianapolis Raceway Park explosion of 1964, which occurred during a National Hot Rod Association drag racing event and resulted in eleven fatalities and many more injuries. This tragic event led to changes to safety regulations for motorsports events around America, and is still remembered today as one of motorsports' deadliest disasters ever experienced.
