About White County, Illinois

White County, Illinois, lies near the borders of Indiana and Kentucky and is known for its rolling hills and picturesque landscapes. The county is mostly agricultural with corn and soybeans being the two primary crops grown there; additionally, it boasts several small towns like Carmi - the county seat - and Norris City which hosts an annual Fall Festival. White County boasts several state parks and recreation areas such as Shawnee National Forest which provide opportunities for hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, etc.

White County, Indiana boasts the world's largest man-made arch bridge: New Harmony Bridge. Built-in 1930 and spanning the Wabash River between White County and neighboring Indiana, it originally served as a toll bridge but is now open to the public at no charge. Another significant event in White County's history was the creation of the Little Wabash River Drainage District (1917) to control flooding in the region; since then it has significantly improved drainage management throughout White County and neighboring regions.

White County, Illinois, has long been home to some notable figures. Bill Monroe - known as "the Father of Bluegrass Music" - was born nearby Rosine but spent much of his childhood here. Monroe is best known for his contribution to bluegrass music and especially for his song "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Another well-known resident from this region is former Illinois Governor Len Small who was born in Kankakee but lived most of his adult life in Carmi. Small served as governor from 1921-1929 and is remembered for his role within Illinois state government during the 1920s.
