About Pulaski County, Illinois

Pulaski County, located in the southernmost region of Illinois and bordering the Ohio River is a small county. It is well-known for its scenic beauty with rolling hills, lush forests, and the winding Ohio River. Despite its small size and importance in American history, Pulaski county has been a significant part of Illinois's past. Named after Casimir Pulaski (Polish military hero), the county was established to honor him. He fought alongside American troops in the Revolutionary War.

Pulaski County has a number of historic sites that are related to the Underground Railroad. This is a network that included safe houses and secret routes used by slaves to escape from slavery in the 19th Century. Because the county is located along the Ohio River, it was an important stop on Underground Railroad. Many sites in the region are now part of the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom program.

Many notable people have lived in Pulaski County over the years. John H. White, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, grew up near Mounds. Robert L. Gibson was an astronaut who flew on five Space Shuttle missions and was the commander of one. Gibson was born in Cooperstown in Pulaski County.

The 2011 Ohio River Flood, which caused extensive damage and forced many people to flee their homes, is one of the most memorable events in Pulaski County's history.
