McHenry County was created in 1836 from Cook and LaSalle Counties. McHenry County was named after Major William McHenry who was a member of the Illinois Militia during Tecumseh's War. He was also a major in the Blackhawk War of 1832 and a member of both the Illinois House of Representatives (Illinois Senate) and House of Representatives. In Vandalia, he died in 1835.
McHenry County was originally extended all the way east to Lake Michigan. The county seat is located in McHenry. However, in 1839 the eastern townships were split off to create Lake County.
