Candler County is located in southern Georgia, just south of Savannah and southeast of Macon. It lies in the Appalachian region, which provides plenty of natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. The county is known for its abundance of waterways, including the Ohoopee River, Canoochee River and Ohoopee River Reservoir, providing excellent fishing and boating opportunities.
Candler County has a rich history and is the birthplace of many famous figures. The first governor of Georgia, Edward Telfair, was born in the county in 1735. Other notable residents include Confederate General Howell Cobb, the first African American to hold a federal office in the United States, Robert Smalls, and the author of the novel “Gone with the Wind,” Margaret Mitchell.
The county’s claim to fame is the Battle of Kettle Creek, which took place in February of 1779. This battle saw American forces lead by General Andrew Pickens defeat a British-led force of Loyalists, this being the first major victory for the Patriots in Georgia during the Revolutionary War. Also noteworthy is the Kettle Creek Museum, which displays artifacts from the Revolutionary War, as well as local lore and history.
