More about Costa Mesa, California

The area was inhabited for many years by members of the Gabrieleno/Tongva, Juaneno/Luiseno and Juaneno/Luiseno tribes. The area was named Vallejo de Santa Ana by a Spanish expedition under Junipero Serra after the 1769 expedition to Gaspar de Portola. Mission San Juan Capistrano was established as the first permanent European settlement in Alta California (New Spain) on November 1, 1776.

Jose Antonio Yorba was granted 62,500 acres by the Spanish Empire in 1801, which he called Rancho San Antonio. Yorba's rancho was the land where Newport Beach, Santa Ana and Villa Park are today.
