Mono County was created in 1861 out of parts of Calaveras and Fresno counties. Alpine County was formed in 1864 from a portion of northern Mono County. Inyo County received parts of the territory in 1866.
Mono Lake, which was named for the Native American Paiute tribe of Mono people in 1852, is the county's name. They used to live in the Sierra Nevada, north of Mono Lake, up to Owens Lake. They were called monachie by their western neighbors, the Yokuts. This was because they traded fly larvae and used them as their main food staple.
