In 1941, labor troubles were a major problem. Stalin and Hitler supported one another during the 22-month period between August 1939 and June 1941, when war broke out in Europe. The U.S. had Communist local union officials oppose American aid to Britain's invasion of Germany. They called for strikes in war industries that supplied Lend-Lease to Britain. The United Auto Workers won over the International Association of Machinists. They represented all employees at Inglewood's North American Aviation factory. Negotiators for the UAW demanded a starting wage of 75c an hour and a 10-cent increase for 11,000 employees. Although the UAW had pledged no strike, a wildcat walkout on June 4 shut down the plant that made four of the nation's fighter planes. Washington intervened after the UAW failed to convince workers to return to work. The national CIO leadership approved President Franklin Roosevelt's request to send in the California National Guard to reopen this plant. The Communist activists became the most vocal supporters of war production when Germany invaded the USSR in June 1941. They also crushed wildcat strikes.
