Lakeport was established in 1888 and is the oldest town in Lake County. Lakeport's history goes back at least 40 years to the Gold Rush Era in the 1840s. Lake County was first visited by miners who came and went through the Northern California gold fields in 1847. Many miners settled permanently in the County after the Gold Rush.
Clear Lake's northeastern end was home to pioneers who were attracted by the attractive farmland and the temperate climate. William Forbes is credited as the "father of Lakeport" by County historians. Forbes was the first to settle in the area that would become Lakeport. Forbes and James Parish founded Lakeport's first business, a blacksmithing shop, and a wagon-making shop. Forbes and other Lakeport merchants are included in the 1867 Pacific Coast Business Directory. Forbes was also the first undertaker in the town and served as the postmaster for many years.
