The Imperial Valley is an intensively irrigated area of the Colorado Desert. It's mainly located in Imperial county, California, U.S. It extends for 50 miles southward from the Salton Sea's southern end into Mexico. It is part of a trough that runs from the Coachella Valley to California's Gulf of California. It lies almost entirely below sea level, at 235 feet at the Salton Sea edge. The desert climate of the hot desert is marked by extreme temperature swings daily. It was once part of California's Gulf of California. The damlike Colorado River Delta Fan deposits cut it off. It was bordered by barren mountains and sand dunes. The area was uninhabited until 1901 when the Imperial Canal opened. This canal diverted Colorado River water through Mexico to the valley. Floodwaters created the Salton Sea in 1905-07.
