The town was established by Mexican gold miners and named after St. Andrew in the Catholic Church. It has been a prominent mining camp since its inception. After a few years, the gold from the original placers began to run out. However, the discovery of gold underground in an 1853 river channel gave life and energy to the camp. Soon it was a town. The town was able to rebuild its entire city after the 1858 and 1863 fires. This gold was a major contributor to the Civil War success of the Union. San Andreas was established as the county seat in Calaveras County in 1866. It was believed to have been a meeting place for Joaquin Murrieta. Black Bart, a notorious highwayman, was tried here and sentenced to prison.
