More about Alameda County

The county was created from large parts of Contra Costa County, and smaller portions of Santa Clara County on March 25, 1853.

Alvarado was the county seat at the time the county was formed. It is now part of Union City. It was moved to San Leandro in 1856 after the devastating 1868 earthquake on the Hayward Fault destroyed the county courthouse. From 1872 to 1875, the county seat was reestablished in Brooklyn. Brooklyn now forms part of Oakland. It has been the county seat for over 100 years.

Alameda County has a lot to do with landlord and tenant issues due to a large amount of real property within the county. Alameda County's landlord-tenant relationship can sometimes cause conflict and landlords and tenants may not be clear about their rights and obligations.
