The county was created from large parts of Contra Costa County, and smaller portions of Santa Clara County on March 25, 1853.
Alvarado was the county seat at the time the county was formed. It is now part of Union City. It was moved to San Leandro in 1856 after the devastating 1868 earthquake on the Hayward Fault destroyed the county courthouse. From 1872 to 1875, the county seat was reestablished in Brooklyn. Brooklyn now forms part of Oakland. It has been the county seat for over 100 years.
